Item is a genealogy of the Echenberg family, combining a family history of the Echenbergs with a general history of the Jewish community in Ostropol and Sherbrooke. The history was produced for distribution at the Echenberg Reunion held on 22-24 August 1986. Included are detailed accounts of early Jewish life in the Ukraine, Ostropol under Russian Rule, early years in Canada and the growth of the Sherbrooke Jewish community. Maps and a genealogical chart are provided. There is correspondence relating to Jewish propaganda in 1937, a brief history of the descendants of Nathan (Knute) Kitner (Moses's grandson from his first marriage), resources for researching family history, as well as the names and addresses of relatives who attended the 1986 reunion.

Echenberg, Quebec (family) : The history of the Echenberg Family has been traced as far back as Moses Echenberg, a Jewish merchant living in the town of Ostropol, Volynia Gubernia, Ukraine in the early 19th century. Moses married twice and produced two small families. His grandson Moses (b. 1863), a descendant through his second marriage, immigrated to Canada in 1886 and eventually settled in Sherbrooke, Quebec. In the fall of 1888, he married Leah Spiegelbord (Smith) (d. 1936) of Odessa. They produced 5 children. In 1902, Moses established the firm of Echenberg Brothers, furniture dealers, with his brother Menassa. Moses played an important role in encouraging and sponsoring the immigration of his family and neighbouring Jewish families of Ostropol to Canada and the United States.
