In 1764 he married Catherine Miller (1745-1826) and together they had eleven children. In 1783 the Smith family moved to Quebec but returned to New York City in 1784 where Elias was listed as a carpenter, distiller and merchant. About 1788 he settled at Niagara. In 1792 he petitioned for land in Hope Township as a Loyalist, thereafter moving to Port Hope in 1801. Between 1802 and 1813 Elias operated a distillery and acted as Justice of the Peace (1805-1813). He also maintained business connections with Montreal, where he acted as a merchant and had interests in printing.
