Fonds consists of material relating to the education, war experiences, and careers in journalism and diplomacy of A.D. Ross. The latter includes approximately three volumes concerning Ross's period as Canadian Ambassador to Chile, 1971-1975.

The fonds also contains various photographic portraits of Andrew D. Ross.

Ross, Andrew Donald, 1914-1987 : Andrew D. Ross, public servant, 18 September 1914-1987, was born in Edmondstone, New Brunswick and received his early education in that province. After attending Mount Allison University, 1932-1935, Ross worked as a journalist with the Canadian Press in Toronto, Halifax and, after World War II, in Ottawa. In 1943, Ross joined the Canadian Army serving first with the Pictou Islanders, as an officer with the Directorate of Military intelligence in Ottawa, 1943-1944, and later as a Press Censor in London and Paris.

In 1947, Ross joined the Department of External Affairs. Until 1958, he held a variety of increasingly responsible information, editorial, press, and public relations positions.

Ross attended the National Defence College course in 1959. Thereafter, he held the following posts: First Secretary and Consul of the Canadian Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela (1959-1962), Emergency Planning Officer for External Affairs, Ottawa, (1962-1964), Consellor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1964-1967), Consellor in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1957-1970), Ambassador to Chile (1971-1975), Secretary to ICER (Interdepartmental Committee on External Affairs), (1976), and Consul-General of the Canadian Embassy in Atlanta, Georgia (1977-1979).
