Item is an Indian agent's record book for the Cape Croker/Saugeen Agency kept by James Allen and his possible successors. It contains a daily journal, a postage register and a type of letter register.

Allen, James, flourished 1888-1895 : James Allen was the first settler of Allenford, a village located on the banks of the Sauble River on Highway 21, halfway between Owen Sound and Southampton. The site, originally known by the Indian name "Flood Wood Crossing", was renamed after Allen. James Allen came to settle in the area in 1857. He was active in municipal affairs, acting as reeve of the amalgamated Townships of Amabel and Albemarle for several years, and then Reeve of Amabel after the separation, from 1870 to 1879, and also for 1884, 1886 and 1887. Mr Allen was appointed Indian Agent in 1885, he died in 1895. He is buried at the Methodist Cemetery.
