Fonds consists of personal papers of Courtney C.J. Bond including correspondence, miscellaneous material, and files relating to the histories The Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1919 and Surveyors of Canada, n.d., 1930-1985. The fonds contains drawings and watercolours done by Bond in England, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, [ca. 1930]-1944; as well as photographs of rural and urban settings throughout Canada; the St. Lawrence Seaway; railway locomotives; architecture, 1950-1969; railroad construction in 1886, 1914-1915; boundary surveying; the Dominion Observatory in 1906; scenes from Shakespearean plays at the Stratford Festival, 1954-1964; photos related to the life of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff; views of buildings and roads in Maitland, Ontario related to an investigation by the Ottawa Branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario into the proposed rebuilding of Highway No. 2 and the threat to historic buildings in the area, 1966; and two half-tone prints from matrixes in the possession of G.M. Hughson, n.d. The fonds also contains copies of photographs taken in 1960, showing views at Côteau du lac, St. Andrews, Martintown, and Williamstown.

Bond, Courtney C. J., 1910-1995 : Courtney Claude Joseph Bond was born April 14, 1910 in Toronto, son of an English father, Charles Frederick Bond and an Irish-Canadian mother, Blanche Agnes Troman, of Toronto. He spent his early years in England. His family returned to Canada in 1916 and settled in Halifax. In 1925 they moved back to Toronto where Courtney Bond was enrolled at St. Michael's College.

After graduation, Bond worked at a number of odd jobs before joining the Corps of the Royal Canadian Engineers, which led to a surveying career with the Geographical Section, General Staff, in Ottawa in the 1930's. During the Second World War, he was assigned to an Engineer posting at Headquarters, 1st. Canadian Infantry Division, and spent a year in Britain. After the war he passed his Dominion Land Surveyors examination and joined National Defence's Historical Section, where he worked on Col. G.W.L. Nicholson's history of the Canadian armed forces, Canadian Expeditionary Forces, 1914-1919. He was promoted to the rank of major in 1955.

In 1961 Bond obtained a B.A. from Queen's University, left the Army and went travelling in Europe. On his return to Canada he was hired by the National Capital Commission as a historian. After leaving the N.C.C. he became head of the Canadian Section, National Map Collection at the Public Archives, in the late 1960's. He left the civil service to join C.U.S.O. in 1971 and went to Tanzania for 3 years. On his return to Canada in 1974 he did free-lance work until his retirement.

Courtney Bond is the author of a number of books on the history of the Ottawa Valley. He prepared maps for A Historical Atlas of Canada (1957), as well as many other publications, and wrote a history of surveying in Canada, Surveyors of Canada, 1867-1967 (1966). His autobiography, An Iron in Many a Fire appeared in 1982.

Bond was married to Elizabeth Street Berton of Ottawa on January 1, 1938. He died in Ottawa on November 16, 1995. The Ottawa Citizen, November 18, 1995.
