Fonds consists of documents created or accumulated by Ouimet during his career. It is made up of the following ten series: Section A - CBC Board of Directors; Section B - CBC Executive Management; Section C - Parliamentary Committees; Section D - Speeches and articles; Section F - Subject; Section G - Ouimet's working papers; Section I - CBC Annual reports; Section E - Ouimet's "notes for Archives; General index and introduction; and Section H - Interviews.

Fonds also contains a photo album documenting the activities and equipment of engineers, Douglas L. West, Alphonse Ouimet and Hollis S. Baird, at the time of their carreers at the Canadian Television Limited in Montreal; and technical systems innovations of Baird Television Limited of London and Jenkins Television Corp. of Passaic, United States.

Ouimet, J. Alphonse, 1908-1988 : Alphonse Ouimet, born in Montreal, studied humanities at Collège Ste-Marie (B.A. 1928) and Engineering at McGill (B. Eng. 1932). He started his career as Research Engineer with Canadian Television Limited and with Canadian Electronics Limited. In 1934, he joined the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission in the same capacity. He was then appointed Operations Engineer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when it was created in 1936. He became Assistant Chief Engineer in 1943, Chief Engineer and Coordinator of Television in 1947, Assistant General Manager in 1952, General Manager in 1953 and President from 1958 to 1967.

After leaving the CBC, he was communications consultant (1968-1984) and Chairman of the Board of Telesat Canada from 1969 to 1980, remaining as Director until 1984. He is a Life Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada and of the Corporation of Professional Engineers of Quebec, and Fellow of the Institute and Electrical and Electronic Engineers and of the Academy of Canadian Engineering. He is a Companion of Canada and has received numerous distinctions and awards including honorary degrees from several universities: Montréal (1947), Acadia (1962), Saskatchewan (1962), McGill (1963), Ottawa (1967), Sherbrooke (1967), Royal Military College of Canada (1974) and Laval (1978). Ouimet relocated to Pointe-Claire, Qué.
