Fonds consists of microfilmed records: correspondence, notices, minutes of the proceedings of meetings concerning the Baronets of Scotland and Nova Scotia, addressed to Sir William Musgrave, 6th Baronet. Includes a manuscript list of names [of holders of the patent?] with dates from 1612 to 1638; rough copy of an "Essay to Settle the Denomination and Rank of the Baronets of Scotland", 23 Feb. 1790; and application of the Committee of Baronets stating the claim of the Nova Scotia Baronets to lands in that colony. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1612.

Musgrave, William, Sir 1735-1800 : 6th Baronet of Scotland and Nova Scotia.

William Musgrave (1735-1800) of Hayton Castle, Cumberland, England was the younger son of Sir Richard Musgrave (ca.1701-66; 4th baronet of Scotland and Nova Scotia). In 1755 he succeeded his brother Sir Richard Musgrave (1724-55) as 6th baronet. In 1759 he married Isabella, dowager Countess of Carlisle. He read for the bar at the Middle Temple from 1753, became a barrister in 1758, a bencher from 1789, and treasurer in 1795. He was commissioner of customs from 1763 and commissioner of accounts from 1785. William Musgrave was a fellow of the Royal Society from 1774 and its vice president in 1780. He was a trustee of the British Museum from 1783.

General note:

The Baronets of Nova Scotia were created by the King of Great Britain under the great seal of Scotland in order to promote the settlement and civilization of Nova Scotia and had the arms of that Province as their Badge. The Baronets of Scotland were never called Nova Scotia Baronets before Collins published his English Baronetage (see the draft MSS "Essay to settle the denomination and rank of the Baronets of Scotland" dated 23 Feb. 1790, later published in &dDThe Gentlemen's Magazine&d@, June 1796, p. 517).
