Fonds consists of the Osgoode papers which are chiefly correspondence, to and from intimate friends on a wide range of personal, political and social matters. They reveal much of Osgoode's private life while disclosing the opinions of his correspondents and himself on the major political and social events of the day. The letters offer specific insights and new information about the policies of major political figures in Upper and Lower Canada during Osgoode's lifetime.

Osgoode, William, 1754-1824 : William Osgoode (1754-1824), was born in London and educated at Oxford. In 1773, he entered Lincoln's Inn and was called to the Bar in 1779. His reputation and influence gained him the appointment as first Chief Justice of Upper Canada in 1791. After only two years in that province, he succeeded (as expected), William Smith as Chief Justice of Lower Canada, serving there from the summer of 1794 until the summer of 1801, although his resignation from office did not take effect until 1 May 1802. In both provinces, Osgoode was also Member of the Executive Council and of the Legislative Council, as well as Speaker of the Legislative Council, from which positions he influenced legislative and judicial developments. Osgoode spent his later years in London. While he received no further judicial appointment, he served on several Royal Commissions investigating legal and judicial matters.

General note:

The Osgoode papers were presented in 1987 by R.G. Burrows, Q.C., of Toronto, on behalf of himself and his cousin Pamela Haines (née Burrows) of London, England.

Arrangement note:

The papers are arranged within three basic groupings. The order of Osgoode's correspondence is chronological within files by author; that of his legal and other papers are arranged chronologically within files by subject or type of document; while the order of the correspondence of Osgoode's friends which came into custody (possibly on their deaths) is chronological within files by recipient.
