Hill, James J. (James Jerome), 1838-1916 : James Jerome Hill, a pioneer transportation official and railway magnate, was born at Rockwood, Upper Canada in 1838. He settled in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1856. His many business ventures there included the Red River Transportation Company, which had a monopoly at the steamboat business on the Red River. With George Stephen and others he acquired the St. Paul and Pacific Railway in 1878 (reorganized as the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway in 1879) and became its president a few years later. Although an original director of the Canadian Pacific Railway, he resigned in 1883 to protest the decision to build the main line north of Lake Superior. He later expanded the St. Paul line into the Great Northern Railway, of which he was president from 1893. Hill died at St. Paul in 1916.
