Fonds consists of petitions, correspondence, despatches, military returns and other papers which reflect Colborne's career as Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Canada and Administrator and Governor-in-Chief of British North America. The material consists of 16 pages of originals and 42 photocopied pages.

Colborne, John, Sir, 1778-1863 : Colonial Governor

Sir John Colborne, first Baron Seaton (1778-1863), served in the British Army in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars with distinction. In 1825 he became Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey; in 1828 Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada; and on 14 April 1836 he became Commander-in-Chief of the forces, a post he held until 14 December 1838 when he was raised to Governor-General of British North America. He was Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, 1843-1849 and Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Ireland, 1855-1860.
