After succeeding his father as Earl of Gosford in 1807, he was elected a representative peer for Ireland in 1811 and supported the Whig policy of conciliation in Ireland.
Gosford's success as Lord Lieutenant of Armagh (1832-1835) led to his appointment by the Melbourne government as Governor-in-Chief of British North America in 1835. Gosford's conciliatory policy towards the patriots met with failure and alienated the British population in Lower Canada. His resignation was accepted on 14 November 1837, shortly before the outbreak of the Rebellion. Gosford unsuccessfully opposed the Act of Union of 1840 in the House of Lords.Additional information:General note:The papers of Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford, were deposited in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland by the 7th Earl of Gosford.
