He gained much influence through his rejection of the 1876 Treaty. The younger members of his following, however, began to ignore his authority in 1885, and participated in such incidents as the massacre at Frog Lake and the burning of Fort Pitt. After a successful defence against Government forces at Frenchman's Butte, Big Bear and his dwindling following evaded Steele's Scouts until the chief gave himself up to J.W. McLean of the Hudson's Bay Company. Big Bear was tried and imprisoned. He was released in 1887 but died the following winter.Additional information:General note:Acquired in 1952 from Mr. G.
