Item consists of a typescript of "The Last of the La Guayrians" by C.C. James. The article deals with the founding of Guelph, Ont., in 1827 by John Galt and the arrival of a party of Scottish immigrants who had made an earlier, but unsuccessful, attempt to settle the county around la Guayra, Venezuela.

James, Charles Canniff, 1863-1916 : Charles Canniff James, public servant, was born in 1863 at Napanee, Upper Canada, and received his B.A. 1883, and his M.A. 1886, from Victoria College, Cobourg. From 1886 to 1891, he was professor of chemistry at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. He was Deputy Minister of the Ontario Department of Agriculture from 1891 until 1912. In 1913, he was appointed a commissioner to administer the Dominion Agricultural Industries Act.

He was the author of a number of technical papers as well as historical articles.
