Fonds consists of family and personal correspondence including correspondence from members of the Meredith, Macdonnell, Graves and Jarvis families and letterbooks of Meredith's personal correspondence, 1842-1893, originals, .3 cm; John Cotton Macdonnell correspondence, 1844-1872, 1 microfilm reel, A-882; official correspondence, Department of the Interior, 1866-1878, originals 8 cm; subject files on cosmic time, civil service income tax, university notes, prison reform and asylums, 1841-1885, originals, 20 cm; journals, including one of a trip to Europe in 1853, 1844-1899, originals, 27 cm; memorabilia, originals, 18 cm.

Fonds also consists of Meredith's journals, 1844-1899, including one of a trip to Europe in 1853, are located on microfilm reels M-187 to M-191.

Meredith, E. A. (Edmund Allen), 1817-1898 : Public Servant

Born and educated in Ireland, E.A. Meredith came to Canada in 1842. In 1844 he was called to the Bar, but he never practised law. He was appointed principal of McGill College in 1846 resigning in 1847 to accept the position of Assistant Provincial Secretary, Canada West. In 1867 Meredith became Under-Secretary of State for the Provinces and in 1873 was appointed Deputy-Minister of the newly-created Department of the Interior, retiring in 1878. Meredith was an active exponent of prison reform and he served with the Canadian Prison Board for 10 years. In 1891 he was appointed to a Commission inquiring into the administration of the Kingston Penitentiary. He was also a member of several library and scientific societies and the author of several publications.
