This series consists of a book of legal case notes for 1885, recorded by Andrew Stuart. It includes an alphabetical index according to the name of the plaintiff (vol. 1, file 7).
Also included is the Letter Patent "de Terrier" for two fiefs and seigniory called "De La Martinière", April 1829 (vol. 2, file 1).

Stuart, Andrew, 1812-1891 : Sir Andrew Stuart was the eldest son of the Honourable Andrew Stuart, Solicitor General of Lower Canada (1838-1840) and a grandson of the Reverend John Stuart, Loyalist established in Canada in 1781.
Sir Andrew was educated at a private school at Chambly, Lower Canada, and was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1834. In 1860 he was appointed a puisne judge of the Superior Court of Lower Canada, and in 1885 he became Chief Justice of this court until his death in 1891. In 1842 he married Charlotte-Elmire, third daughter of Philippe-Joseph Aubert de Gaspé, Seigneur of Saint Jean Port-Joli; and by her he had five sons and five daughters. He bought the seigniory La Martinière in 1846. In 1887, Andrew Stuart was created a Knight Bachelor.

General note:

The Book of legal case notes was acquired in 1984 from L.C. Audette, Ottawa, Ont., grand son of Andrew Stuart. The Letter Patent may habe been acquired with the other material in the fonds in 1917.

The Book of legal case notes was acquired as a single item and given the reference number MG29-E5/R7773. It was integrated in 2010 in the fonds James and Andrew Stuart.
