Fonds consists of a microfilm of Carr's "Naval History of Bermuda from the earliest times" and Carr's "History of Naval Establishments, Bermuda". "Naval History of Bermuda from the earliest times" was composed in 1893, although the volume contains a few items of later date. The pages are numbered 1-260, but several are blank and there are some unnumbered insertions. The text is prefaced with several maps and an "index" of topics. Carr's "History of Naval Establishments, Bermuda" is more extensive, including maps, tables of the various officers commanding at Newfoundland and Jamaica as well as Bermuda, and commentary on the Convict Establishment. The pages are numbered 1-352, prefaced by a lengthy index and one map. This material is located on microfilm reel M-8027.

Carr, Henry John, 1839-1914 : Henry John Carr (d.1914) began his career in the Royal Navy in 1859. From January 1892 to June 1894, while a Captain, he had charge of the Naval Establishment at Bermuda. On his retirement in 1899 he had reached the rank of Rear Admiral and held a variety of commands.

General note:

Carr credits William R.E. Smart, M.D., of the Naval Hospital, for large portions of his information in both manuscripts. The two texts are distinct, the first being more general and the second more focussed on the period 1795-1863.

Citation/reference note:

Portions of the text have been published in the Bermuda Quarterly, notably the descriptions of the Naval Dockyard, the Convict Establishment and the identification of vessels stationed at Bermuda in the early nineteenth century.
