Fonds consists of documents relating to the Rebellion of 1837 compiled by the Reverend Borthwick by order of the Quebec Government from the records of the court found in the Montreal gaol, including transcripts of papers found in the Court House and with private individuals; a list of persons incarcerated in the Montreal gaol, 1837-1839; and commitments, letters, orders and discharges. Also included are notebooks giving a list of names in the order in which they occur in the transcripts.

Borthwick, J. Douglas (John Douglas), 1832-1912 : John Douglas Borthwick was born in Scotland, educated at Edinburgh University, and came to Canada in 1850. He taught school in various cities in Upper Canada and then in Montreal. He was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1866. He served as a missionary in Montreal and, for over 20 years, was rector of St. Mary's, Hochelaga. He served as military chaplain and as Protestant chaplain to the Montreal prison. He also compiled several general works of reference and wrote several works on the history of Montreal. Encyclopedia Canadiana, Vol. 2 p. 25.
