Mount Stephen, George Stephen, Baron, 1829-1921 : Sir George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, born in Scotland, immigrated to Canada in 1850 where he entered the Montreal firm of William Stephen and Company, textile manufacturers.

In 1873 he was elected a director of the Bank of Montreal, and served as its president from 1876 to 1881. He was one of a group of financiers, including his cousin Donald Smith (later Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal), who bought the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway and reorganized it in 1879 with Stephen as president. He lent the resources and prestige of the Bank of Montreal to the Syndicate that in 1880 undertook the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and became the railway's first president in 1881 until 1888. In 1888 he retired to England.

General note:

The private and confidential correspondence was acquired in 1957 from Stephen's nephew, Mr. Stephen Douglas Cantlie of Montreal, Que. Letters patent were acquired in 1973 from Eric Reford of Montreal, Quebec.

Custodial history:

The letters patent, four parchment documents, vols. 2 to 5, were on loan to the Mount Stephen Club of Montreal and displayed there until December 2000.

Sir George Stephen was related to the Reford family of Montreal through the marriage of his niece Elsie Reford.
