Robert Monckton (1726-1782), second son of John Monckton, Viscount Galway, was commissioned in the British Army in 1741. By 1752 he was a lieutenant-colonel serving in Nova Scotia. During 1753 he put down the insurrection of German settlers at Lunenburg. He commanded the successful campaign against the French forts of Beauséjour and Gaspereau, in 1755, and later supervised the expulsion of the Acadians. He was made Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia in 1755. During the 1758 siege of Louisbourg, Monckton was forced to remain at Halifax, forwarding supplies, but later that year destroyed some French settlements up the Saint John River. He was made second-in-command to James Wolfe in the 1759 campaign against Quebec. In 1761 he was appointed Governor of New York, a position he retained until 1765. Monckton crowned his successful military career as commander of the army that captured the West Indian islands of Martinique, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent in 1762.Additional information:General note:The Monckton papers on reel A-1715 were identified as MG 40 Q 17; on reel A-1716, as MG 18 O 14.Location of originals note:The originals are located in the Manuscripts Department, University of Nottingham Library, Nottingham, England.Related material:For additional Robert Monckton material, see MG 18, M, Northcliffe Collection, Series I, Robert Monckton Papers.Subject heading:- Canada - History - Lunenberg Rebellion, 1753 Jeffrey Amherst, [1751-1782]
