1 map : blueline 54 x 87 cm.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The fonds consists of manuscripts and photographs relating to Ruth McKenzie's research and writing, including material on Laura Secord, Proletarian literature, and Leeds and Grenville counties. The Laura Secord files (volumes 1-2, 0.225 m) hold a script of Pierre Berton's 1975 telecast on Laura Secord annotated by Ruth McKenzie, and related correspondence, and notes, photocopies of archival papers, correspondence, press releases, book reviews and manuscripts of her completed work "Laura Secord the Legend and the Lady". In addition, there are photographs relating to Laura Secord depicting historic sites; historic monuments; the Secord homestead at Queenston, Ontario; and photographic copies of paintings by Laura Secord. The Proletarian literature files (volume 3, 0.025 m) contain a manuscript of Ruth McKenzie's graduation essay for her B.L.S. degree, entitled "A Survey of the Proletarian Movement in Canadian Literature", 1938, and the manuscript of her article published in the Dalhousie Review in 1939, "Proletarian Literature in Canada".
The files relating to her book "Leeds and Grenville: their First Two Hundred Years" (volumes 3-4, 0.375 m) includes notes, correspondence, manuscripts, clippings and brochures on the history of the two counties arranged by subjects such as agriculture, Brockville, churches, Gananoque, industries, people, Rideau Canal, lakes and water navigation, towns and villages and United Empire Loyalists. An unpublished manuscript. "Colonel Joel Stone of Gananoque: His Life and Letters" by H. William Hawke is also included in the fonds.
Fonds also includes a map of Leeds and Grenville counties, annotated by Ruth McKenzie in the course of research for a book on the history of the area, with Indian archeological sites, stagecoach routes and early historical sites and names.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:McKenzie, Ruth Isabel, b. 1904 : Ruth McKenzie, author, librarian, teacher, was born 8 December 1904 on a farm in Wellington County, Ontario. After leaving high school, she attended the Toronto Normal School and then taught successively in the continuation schools at Aberfoyle and Wroxeter. She graduated from Queen's University in 1930 with honours in English and History, after which she obtained a library science degree from the University of Toronto. She worked as a reference librarian in the Toronto Public Library until 1943 when she became editor and research director for National Farm Radio Forum, responsible for the study bulletin Farm Forum Guide. In 1954 she joined the Citizenship Branch of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration where she edited the bimonthly periodical Citizen.
After an early retirement, Ruth McKenzie began her career as a freelance writer, editor and researcher. In addition to various articles and booklets, she has written the following books: Leeds and Grenville, Their First Two Hundred Years, 1967; Laura Secord, the Legend and the Lady, 1971; James FitzGibbon, Defender of Upper Canada, 1983; and she edited The St. Lawrence Survey Journals of Henry Wolsey Bayfield, two volumes, 1984 and 1986.Additional information:General note:Donated by Ruth I.
