Verreau, H. A. B. (Hospice Anthelme Baptiste), 1828-1901 : Hospice-Anthelme-Jean-Baptiste Verreau, baptized Hospice-Anthelme, was born at L'Islet (Québec) in 1828. After studying at the seminary of Quebec, he taught rhetoric to the petit séminaire de Sainte-Thérèse in 1850, then, was ordained a priest in 1851. A few years later, in 1857, he served as principal of l'école normale Jacques-Cartier of Montreal, until his death in 1901. He was known as gifted organizer and pedagogue.

Verreau was also known as an archivist and historian. In 1873, the Canadian government commissioned him to report on material held by European archives documenting the history of Canada, in particular in Paris, London and Rome. His report was published in 1874 under the title: Report of proceedings connected with Canadian archives in Europe (and in French: "Rapport sur le résultat de la recherche des documents relatifs au Canada en Europe"). In 1873, Verreau was editor of the book Invasion du Canada: collections de mémoires, 1870-1873. In addition, he was a professor at Laval University from 1887, as well as a member of various historical societies. See T. Hamel, Dictionnaire biogaphique du Canada, vol.
