Fonds consists of letters from Principal George Munro Grant of Queen's University to Charles Mair relating to Mair's literary work and to Queen's University.

Fonds also consists of photographs of the site of Mair's birthplace; the Charles Mair Memorial, 1936; and of Mair at Fort Steele, B.C., 1919.

Mair, Charles, 1838-1927 : Charles Mair was born in Lanark, Upper Canada. He was one of the originators of the Canada First Movement, and went to Red River as a paymaster to a road building party in 1868. He became active in the Canadian Party, was imprisoned by Riel during the Red River Rebellion in 1870, escaped and subsequently returned to Ontario. There he agitated for suppression of the rebellion.

He served as an officer in the force sent to put down the North West Rebellion in 1885. In 1889 he joined the immigration service of the Department of the Interior and was subsequently stationed in Alberta and British Columbia. He retired to Victoria in 1921. His literary work includes the verse-drama Tecumseh published in 1886.
