Fonds consists of the microfilmed Canada-related diaries of Rev. Rowan Ernest Grice-Hutchinson describing his activities as a Church of England incumbent in Sorrento, British Columbia, 1913-1923 (Vols. 6-24) including his service as an artillery chaplain of the British Expeditionary Forces in France, 1916-1919 (Vols. 12-17). This material is located on microfilm reels A-1612 to A-1615.

The diaries cover Rev. and Mrs. Grice-Hutchinson's departure from England by ship in 1913, observations of train travel across Canada, day-to-day activities of the parish of Sorrento, B.C., war news from England, his departure for France in June 1916 and subsequent return to Canada 14 Nov. 1919 on the Empress of France, the resumption of his duties in Sorrento, and conclude with their return to the continent in 1923 to visit sites of World War I action, including memorials to Canadian servicemen. The war diaries describe vividly his life as a chaplain at the front lines and Field Artillery movements in France, sprinkled with his furloughs in England with family.

Grice-Hutchinson, Rowan Ernest, b. 1885 : Clergyman, Chaplain.

Rowan Ernest Grice-Hutchinson was born in 1885 and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, receiving his BA in 1907 and MA in 1911. He graduated from Lich Theological College in 1908. He was accepted as a deacon of the Church of England in 1909 and a priest in 1911. Before his arrival in Canada, Grice-Hutchinson was curate of Armitage with Pipe Ridware parish, 1909-1913. Rowan Ernest and his wife Maud travelled to Canada's west coast in 1913 where he became Incumbent of the Sorrento parish, serving until 1923, with the exception of the years 1916 to 1919, during which he was chaplain of the British Expeditionary Forces in France.
