Hopkins, John Castell, 1864-1923 : John Castell Hopkins was born in Dyersville, Iowa and educated in Bowmanville, Ontario. He began a career with the Imperial Bank in 1883 but later became a journalist. From 1890 to 1893 he was associate editor of the Toronto Empire. He worked freelance for a time, contributing widely to periodicals and encyclopedias, specializing in Canadian affairs and imperial relations. Between 1897 and 1900 he edited the six volume work, CANADA: AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE COUNTRY. With the help of his wife he published THE CANADIAN ANNUAL REVIEW OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS from 1902 until his death in 1923. She continued publication after his death. Hopkins was also the author of numerous books and pamphlets.
