He graduated from the University of Toronto in medicine in 1902. After practising as a local doctor, Michell went to Britain in 1906 to get further training. He became a ship's surgeon and made two trips to Africa. By chance Michell was chosen to be the ship's surgeon on the exploration ship "Nimrod" for Sir Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909. However Michell remained aboard the "Nimrod" and did not take part in the exploration of Antarctica itself. During the First World War Michell served with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Returning to Canada he practised medicine in Ontario and then obtained a diploma in public health from the University of Toronto. Michell became director of the North Bay offices of the Ontario Department of Health. In 1935 he was transferred to Ottawa and retired from the Ontario Department of Health in 1949.
