Biography/Administrative history:

Young, Ruth, 1884-1983 : Dr. Ruth Young (1884-1983), physician, graduated from the Advanced Medical School at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and undertook post-graduate work in Vienna and Dresden. Dr. Young spent the majority of her career in India, working as a lecturer; a professor of surgery; the director of the Maternity and Child Welfare Bureau of the Indian Red Cross Society and lastly as the principal of Lady Hardinge Medical College.

She published several books, including 'The Work of Medical Women in India' in 1929 and 'The Science of Health' in 1932.

Dr. Young received a number of awards and honours, including the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal for Service in India, the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal and a Coronation Medal. She was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1928 and was promoted to a Commander (CBE) in 1941.
