Fonds consists of family letters, correspondence relating to Bell's writing, 1899 record of expenses diary, Geological Survey of Canada Instructions for 1899, notes, and souvenirs, 1895-1929; speeches and lectures including manuscripts dealing with geology, mineral development, and Armistice Day, 1923-1931; reports including geological reports, memoranda, statistics, and charts relating to mining properties in Canada, Russia, and New Zealand, 1917-1931.

The fonds also contains photographs of the International Nickel Company mines at Copper Cliff, Ont., and at Creighton Mines, Ont., ca. 1910-1920.

Bell, James MacKintosh, 1877-1934 : James MacKintosh Bell, geologist, was born at St. Andrew's, Quebec. Between 1896 and1900, he assisted his uncle, Dr. Robert Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada, in making a number of geological surveys in the Mackenzie River area and in Northern Canada. In 1901-1902, he was a geologist to the Lake Superior Corporation, with headquarters at Sault Ste. Marie. He received his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1902, and in 1903 was employed by the Government of Ontario on geological work in the region southward of James Bay.

From 1905 to 1911 he was the Director of the Geological Survey of New Zealand. Following his return to Canada he became a consulting engineer and geologist. He went overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and from 1917 to 1919 he was on the staff of the British Military Mission to Russia. Dr. Bell later served as managing director of the Atlas Exploration Company and the Huronian Belt Company. He was the author of a number of bulletins and articles as well as The Wilds of Maoriland (1914) and Sidelights of the Siberian Campaign (1921).
