Fonds consists of messages, 8 June and 5 July 1906, left on northern Ellesmere Island by Rear Admiral Peary, and a message in German, 22 April 1930, left by H.K.E. Kruger of the German Arctic Expedition, reporting the finding of a cairn erected by Peary.

Peary, Robert Edwin, 1856-1920 : Robert Edwin Peary, arctic explorer, graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine, 1877. In 1881, he became a civil engineer in the United States Navy. He served as First Assistant to the Chief Engineer of the Nicaragua Canal survey of 1884-1885. In 1886, he sailed north aboard the whaler Eagle. After directing the Nicaragua canal survey of 1888, he organized his first expedition to northern Greenland, 1891. He made a number of Arctic trips and was the first to reach the North Pole, 6 April 1909.
