Fonds consists of a typed diary, 19 September 1913 to 13 September 1914, which includes copies of letters from Burt McConnell to Robert L. Borden proposing rescue and search plans to find both V. Stefansson and the men of the Karluk. A description of the rescue by the King and Wing and the ensuing controversy with Captain Barlett constitutes the last portion of the diary.

McConnell, Burt M., b. 1888 : Burt M. McConnell, surveyor, was born at Port Norris, New Jersey. He studied medicine in 1904 at Philadelphia before beginning a career as a surveyor on an Idaho railroad. McConnell gained Northern experience at the "Polar Bear" Mine in Nome, Alaska between 1910-1912, and later joined the Canadian Arctic Expedition as a Secretary to V. Stefansson and a meteorologist with the Northern Party. After being separated from the Karluk he made his way to Alaska where he promoted several attempts and assisted in the rescue of the men from Wrangel Island in September 1914.
