The entries concern the weather, ice conditions, problems with drunkenness among the crew, contacts with Inuit, hunting of musk-ox and polar bears and arrangements for trapping. They also concern the John Ross Arctic cairn records on Devon Island and Bernier's buildings cairns at Johnstone Harbour and King George V Mountain on Baffin Island. The October to December portion of the 1911 diary covers Macdonald's trip home to Georgetown, P.E.I. for his father's funeral and his service as Second Mate on the Nova Scotia out of New York to the West Indies. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel M-5506.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:MacDonald, Edward : Edward Macdonald served as Third Officer on the Arctic under Captain J.E. Bernier during the 1910-1911 voyage to the north to assert Canadian sovereignty. Macdonald's home was in Georgetown, P.E.I. and he served in the South African War in 1901.
