Fonds consists of the textual records of Lloyd Baillie Rochester. It includes mining, 1925-1978; aviation, 1915-1981; personal correspondence and diaries, 1912-1981; family papers, 1882-1981; and subject files, 1916-1980.

Fonds also contains many photographs and postcards, 1860-1967, by various photographers, relating to Lloyd B. Rochester's activities, career, family, and associates.

Fonds also includes two airmail first flight covers, which are Elliot Fairchild Air Transport Limited, Rouyn, Quebec, to Hailebury, Ont., 12 August 1926; and Fairchild Air Transport Limited, Hailebury to Rouyn, 20 October 1926.

Fonds also consists of maps and architectural drawings, 1891-1968. The maps relate to mines and mining claims in Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, and to Europe during World War I. The architectural drawings pertain to the Ottawa residence, "Maple Lawn."

Fonds also consists of motion pictures depicting mining exploration, aviation, and family activities, as well as a sound recording about mining.

Rochester, Lloyd B., 1893-1981 : Lloyd B. Rochester, mining developer and aviator, the descendant of a pioneer Ottawa family, was born on 22 June 1893. He was educated in Ottawa and started at McGill in 1913. However, his education was interrupted when he enlisted in 1915. He served in the Artillery and the Forestry Corps before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. After a stint as a fighter pilot, he became an instructor at the Central Flying School, Gosport, England. After the war he returned to McGill and received his B.Sc. in Mining Engineering in 1921. Rochester soon became involved in the mining boom in northern Quebec and Ontario. Realizing the advantages of using aircraft in prospecting, Rochester, his father and several others set up Prospectors Airways Co. Ltd. in 1926. In return for flying prospectors and supplies, Prospectors Airways received a share of any mineral find. One success was when he and Leo Springer found a large copper deposit near Chibougamau Quebec. Besides being the manager of Prospector Airways, Rochester was an active bush pilot, prospector, and mining investor.

During World War II Rochester was with the Aircraft Section of the Department of Munitions and Supply. Afterwards he and his brother Lawrence opened an office to search for and develop mining properties in the Ottawa area. An attempt to develop the ore at Marmora was not successful. However, they did succeed in developing a large open pit iron mine at Bristol, Quebec.

Rochester had several important continuing interests. His World War I and bush flying experience led to an active correspondence with fellow pilots and historians and participation in aviation societies. His interest in his own roots led him to compile the genealogies of the Rochester and Cole families in Canada. In 1936, he purchased the historic Ottawa house, "Maplelawn", which had been built in 1831-1834. In order to preserve the house, Rochester sold it to the National Capital Commission in 1952, though he continued to live in it until his death on 6 May 1981.
