3 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of an incomplete and unrevised manuscript, [ca. 1950], of a history of transportation prepared from material which Professor Innis intended to revise and publish. A portion of the manuscript was published as "Empire and Communications" (Oxford, 1950). The manuscript was microfilmed in 1958 for private circulation. It is located on microfilm reel M-292.

Innis was born near Otterville, Ont. and educated at McMaster University and the University of Chicago. He was appointed lecturer in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Toronto in 1920, and in 1937 he became head of the department. In 1947 he was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies. Innis served on several Royal Commissions, was president of the Royal Society of Canada in 1946, and was the author of numerous books and scholarly articles. Innis was a pioneer in Canadian historiography in his early career, developing the staples thesis through his study of railways, the fur trade, fisheries and lumber industries, and, in his later career pioneered in communication studies.
