Fonds consists of Imperial Munitions Board correspondence regarding the construction of steel ships; shipbuilding contracts between the Imperial Munitions Board and J. Coughlan and Sons, Vancouver and Polson Iron Works, Toronto; and miscellaneous material including transcripts of papers discussing the revival of Canadian shipbuilding due to Imperial Munitions Board, 1907-1939.

Gear, William Inkerman, 1857-1939 : William Inkerman Gear was born in Toronto, and at age 17 joined the shipping agency and wholesale firm of Robert Reford Company Limited. He eventually became a partner and vice-president. The company was the agent for major steamship lines serving Eastern Canada. In 1929, Gear set up his own shipping agency. He was a founder and president of Crown Trust Company as well as a director of various other companies. He was appointed to the St. Lawrence River Commission by the Dominion government in 1911 and headed a special Board of Trade Committee on the St. Lawrence and the port of Montreal in 1934. Gear was an officer in the Militia, and acted as Director of Steel Shipbuilding for the Imperial Munitions Board in Ottawa during World War I.
