Fonds consists of correspondence and memoranda arranged alphabetically dealing primarily with Far Eastern trade, railway rates and financing. Much of the correspondence is with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Fonds also includes articles written by Farrer in the period 1911 to 1914 dealing chiefly with transportation and economic questions, and newspaper clippings and printed material.

Farrer, Edward, 1850-1916 : Edward Farrer, journalist, was born in Ireland, educated in England, and came to Canada in 1870. He engaged in editorial work with a number of newspapers in Canada and the United States including the Toronto Daily Telegraph. 1870-72, the Toronto Mail, 1872-1874, the New York World, the Winnipeg Sun and the Winnipeg Times. Farrer lived in Washington from 1892 to 1905, when he came to Ottawa to work as a correspondent for the London Economist. He was a firm believer in closer ties with the United States and a frequent contributor to periodicals and newspapers.
