Fonds consists of private correspondence from Donald A. Smith (later Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal) to Colin Rankin. The correspondence includes references to personal matters, the fur trade, and to events such as the Red River Rebellion in 1870. Also included is a receipt for a government grant of flour from the Indians at Lake Temiskaming.

Rankin, Colin, 1827?-1921 : Colin Rankin, a native of Bathurst, New Brunswick, gave fifty years of service to the Hudson's Bay Company. He was the first man of Canadian birth to be taken into clerical service within the organization. He began his career at age 22 as a clerk upon the recommendation of Hector Mackenzie, Chief Factor of Upper Ottawa. He served at many posts and in 1875 he rose to Chief Factor, a position he held until his retirement in 1898.

In 1848 he was posted at Mattawa as a clerk, and in 1853 he went to Lachine and then to St. Maurice, followed by Montreal in 1854. In June of 1856 he was appointed to take charge of the St. Maurice District until 1860 when he was stationed in the Lake Superior District, and in 1866 he went on to the Saquenay District. In 1868 he took charge of the Simcoe and Ottawa Districts with headquarters at Lindsay, Ontario.

Rankin was made Chief Trader in 1873 and was given charge of the Temiskaming District. Soon after, in 1875, he was promoted to Chief Factor. He moved the Temiskaming headquarters in Mattawa in 1882 at the request of Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal, then Mr. Donald A. Smith and president of the Hudson's Bay Company. Rankin was a personal friend of Donald Smith and Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The Gazette, Montreal, Thursday, April 21, 1921, p. 4.
