Aldrich, Pelham, 1844-1930 : Naval Officer

Lieutenant Pelham Aldrich, Royal Navy served on the Sir George Nares Arctic expedition of 1875-6, and on the earlier H.M.S. CHALLENGER expedition of 1872-6. He later achieved the rank of admiral, and as a naval surveyor led a number of research expeditions including the H.M.S. EGERIA. This deep-sea sounding cruise was concerned with the projected telegraph cable connecting Canada with Australasia, and made history at the time by recording a depth of 4,000 fathoms, the deepest sounding then attained. In 1891 he returned to general naval service.
