Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, and pamphlets arranged in chronological order, relating to H. Bingham Higginson's unadjusted claim against the Canadian government in respect to the erection of iron bridges on the Intercolonial Railway. Correspondents include Sir Sandford Fleming, Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir Wilfred Laurier, Sir Charles Tupper and various ministers and officials of the Department of Railways and Canals.

Higginson, H. Bingham, fl. 1871 : H. Bingham Higginson, a Halifax steamship agent related by marriage to Sir Sandford Fleming, sub-contrated to the Fairbairn Engineering Co. of England to transport from England and erect the iron bridges on the Intercolonial Railroad in 1871. The company went into liquidation before the account with Higginson was settled. Higginson, his daughters and Sir Sandford Fleming tried unsuccessfully to have the Canadian government cover the outstanding claim.
