Television centennial special with host Percy Saltzman, featuring celebrities and event in the fields of Canadian history, sports, music, broadcasting, literature, and culture. The program includes:~Stills of 100-year-old Sophie Rayburn and of Canadian cities in 1867 and today, including: Montreal, Winnipeg, Charlottetown, Toronto, Victoria, Regina, Calgary, and St. John's.~Archival footage of: the Dionne quintuplets in 1934 with Dr. Alan Roy Dafoe dressed as Santa Claus; the first motorized snowplow from 1924; the 1943 Quebec Conference with Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Mackenzie King; and the construction of the Trans-Canada highway.~Tom O'Malley questions New Yorkers about their knowledge of Canada, eliciting many humourous replies.~A group of singers perform a song about Canadian exports with stills of Canadian goods.~Clips of the royal visit of the Prince of Wales to Newfoundland in 1919.~Jim Coleman takes a look at the history of sports in Canada. Included are stills of various football players and clips of: 1931, 1932, and 1965 Grey Cup games; figure skater Barbara Ann Scott; golfer Ross Summerhill; marathoner Gerard Coté; the Richardson curling team of Regina; thoroughbred Northern Dancer in 1964; and swimmer Marilyn Bell.~Foster and Bill Hewitt present a look at hockey in Canada. Footage includes: the first hockey game film in Canada in 1898; the 1967 Stanley Cup win by the Toronto Maple Leafs; stills of the 1910 Renfrew Millionaires; the 1926 New York Americans; and the 1940 Stanley Cup game.~Singer Tommy Ambrose sings a medley of songs.~Clips of: interpretive dancing in Toronto in 1922; writer Stephen Leacock at his Orillia, Ontario home with voice-over readings from his work; the 1912 house-cleaning olympics; the first armoured regiment in 1913; an ice fashion show; and a 1908 regatta in Winnipeg.~Stills of various personalities by photographer Yousuf Karsh accompanied by comments.~Members of the Brassard family sing French folk-songs.~Clips of Canadian military action including: sailors boarding ships for the 1899 Boer War; the World War I comedy troupe, the Dumbells, singing "Oh What a Lovely War"; opening scenes from the CANADA CARRIES ON series; Generals Montgomery and Crerar with troops in Germany; Canadian Army newsreel footage of bombing missions and Canadian prisoners of war; and Canadian tanks in action. Seventeen-year-old singer Laurel Ward sings "Fare Thee Well".~Stills of Canadian paintings and comments on Canadian literature by broadcaster Gordon Sinclair. Stills of the Yukon gold rush days accompany quotes from the Robert Service poem "The Law of the Yukon".~Pierre Berton comments on Expo '67 with footage of the Montreal site. Don Harron as Charlie Farquharson presents his slides of Expo '67.~Broadcaster J. Frank Willis presents a look at Canadian broadcasting with excerpts of: the Royal Diamond Jubilee broadcast of 1927; the musical MAPLE LEAF FOREVER broadcast for the Silver Jubilee of King George V; the 1936 live broadcast from the site of the Moose River Mine disaster; HAPPY GANG radio show; and theme music from various radio programs.~Canadian television is similarly reviewed through stills and clips including: opening credits from FIGHTING WORDS with Nathan Cohen; MUSIC MAKERS '58 with Jack Kane and his orchestra; the Julius Caesar skit by comedians Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster; Tommy Abrose; HOWDY DOODY TIME and HOLIDAY RANCH openers; singer Juliette; and a variety of television performers and entertainers.~The program concludes with clips of: the first baby born in Canada's second century; Dominion Day crowds at the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa; and scenic shots from across the country. <90mn>
