Fonds consists of the family records and correspondence of the Snaith and Sykes families, (1828-1924) organized into seven files: Personal correspondence of the Snaith and Sykes families, 1881-1922 (file 1); Snaith family records, 1828-1881, including a list of members of the Royal Montreal Cavalry troop, 1828; copies of documents concerning a disputed horse race on the Plains of Abraham, 1842; an account of the rescue of a portrait of Queen Victoria from the fire in the Parliament House, Montreal, 1849; commissions of the peace and genealogical records (file 2); Sykes family records, 1844-1924, including a letter written by an ex-convict to his former in-mates praising an act of charity done him by Rev. James Sykes (file 3); Manuscript poems, stories and educational exercises (files 4 and 5); Miscellaneous press cuttings and printed pamphlets (file 6).

Fonds also consists of photographs of ships, family photographs and 2 stereoscope plates of a baptismal ceremony.

Snaith (family) : William Snaith (1794-1891) emigrated from Darlington, Lancashire to Quebec City some time before 1817, the year he was made a freemason there. He later settled in Montreal where he served in the Royal Montreal Cavalry troop and as a justice of the peace. He had seven children by his wife, Sarah Anne Woodbury (1801-1845) of Berlin, Vermont. The members of the family chiefly represented in these papers are Eliza Ann Snaith (1821-1917), William Woodbury Snaith (1829-1901) and his wife, Emma Elizabeth (1842-1922). Emma was the daughter of Rev. James Samuel Sykes (1812-1878), who had been a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a port Chaplain at Quebec and rector of Trinity Church, Quebec.
