It was founded on 18 May 1922 when the Historic Landmarks Association, which had been established 1907 by the Royal Society of Canada, was renamed and reconstituted. Still concerned with historic preservation, its enlarged mandate involved encouraging historical research and interest in Canadian history and coordinating the efforts of provincial and local historical societies. Promoting historical scholarship ultimately became its main activity, through an annual meeting and an extensive publications programme. The CHA was incorporated in 1970 and is a member of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences. It is one of the oldest learned societies in Canada. The CHA today works to integrate historical knowledge and perspectives in both the scholarly and public spheres, to ensure the accessibility of historical resources, and to defend the rights and freedoms of historians in the pursuit of historical inquiry.Additional information:General note:Received from various sources since the 1950s, primarily from the officers of the Canadian Historical Association.
A specimen of the Garneau medal was given to the Public Archives of Canada in 1984 on permanent loan by Carmen Carroll in his capacity as English Language Secretary to the Canadian Historical Association.Subject heading:Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG28-I4 -
