Glansevern (Welshpool, Wales) : In 1767, Captain William Owen, RN (1735-1778), secretary to Sir William Campbell, governor of Nova Scotia, was granted Campobello island as a reward for his service. A colony was started after 1770 and was developed by the Reverend David Owen (1754-1829), nephew of Captain Owen. Published works relevant to the Canadian portion of the collection include Kate Gannet Wells, Campobello (1892; also CIHM nos. 49061 and 54519); Victor Hugo Palsits, ed., Narrative of American Voyages and Travels of Captain William Owen, RN (1942); and Collections of the New Brunswick Historical Society, Volumes I and II (1897-1899).
