O'Hara, Robert, 1822-1900 : Lawyer

Robert O'Hara (1822-1900) was born in Hampshire, England. He was the eldest son of Peninsular War veteran Lieutenant-Colonel Walter O'Hara, K.T.S. (1787-1874) of County Galway, Ireland, and of his wife Marian, née Murray (ca. 1804-1882) of Norwich, England. He emigrated to Upper Canada with his parents in 1826. There are references to him as a child in his father's diary (MG 24, I 162) and his own reminiscences of his childhood, 22 September 1872, are with the papers of his son, Deputy Minister of Trade and Commerce F.C.T. O'Hara (MG 30, E 104, available on reel M-782). He was educated at Upper Canada College and went into the legal profession. He settled at Chatham, Ontario, where he was a junior partner of William Douglas, Q.C. He became first a Master in Chancery, then subsequently in the Supreme Court. He died in September 1900.

In 1868 he had married Maria Sophia Dobbs (d.1927), a daughter of the Reverend Francis William Dobbs of Portsmouth, Ontario, by whom he had four sons and a daughter. His youngest son, Geoffrey de Vere O'Hara (1882-1967), was the composer of a well-known World War I song, "K-K-K-Katy".
