Fonds consists of records which reflect the career of Abraham Lieff as a judge. The textual records have been divided into three series: Canadian Committee of the North American Section of the Commission on the Reorganization of the World Zionist Organization; Community affairs; Personal and legal career series, n.d., 1926-1989.

The fonds contains sound recordings including recordings of a testimonial dinner and sod turning ceremonies; dictation of notes for a publication entitled, Beyond the Iron Fence; and travelogue tapes of a visit to Israel by Lieff containing commentary on Canadian Israeli relations, 1965-1975.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting Abraham Lieff participating in various activities and events including Lieff with the Hon. Lester Pearson and the Hon. George McIlraith, [ca. 1963]; presentation of Human Relations Awards by the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews to Abraham Lieff and others, 1976.

The fonds also contains a painting showing a water boy at an ancient well in the foothills of Mount Taber, Israel. This work was painted by Arthur Wentworth Roebuck during a visit there in 1956, which was presented by him to Abraham Lieff in 1963.

Lieff, Abraham H., 1903- : Born in Antopol, Grodno province, Poland, on March 5, 1903, Abraham Lieff came to Canada with his mother in late 1904. His father had arrived in Canada a year earlier to escape anti-semitic persecution. The family eventually settled in Ottawa in 1905 where he received his early education. Abraham Lieff graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1926 and was called to the Ontario Bar that year. In 1929, he married Sadie Lazarovitz, of Quebec City. A graduate of McGill University Law School in 1928, Miss Lazarovitz was one of the first Jewish women to practice law in Canada.

Abraham Lieff served as Assistant Crown Attorney, 1935-1937 and Magistrate of Carleton County, 1939-1945. Early in his career while still in private practice in Ottawa, he acted as counsel to the House of Commons Committee on Industrial Relations, 1946 and the Senate Special Committee on Narcotic Drug Traffic, 1956. Appointed King's Counsel in 1948, he was the first person of the Jewish faith to be appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario on July 11, 1963. He retired from the bench in March, 1978 but continued to serve as Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Ontario until 1990. He also served as a Deputy Judge of the Federal Court of Canada. He instituted the pre-trial of contested family law cases in the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1975 and organized the Family Law Division of the Supreme Court in 1976.

A nationally recognized leader within the Canadian Zionist movement, Abraham Lieff served as Chairman of the Canadian Committee of the North American Section of the Commission on the Re-organization of the World Zionist Organization, 1965-1966 along with Mr. Justice Harry Batshaw, of the Quebec Superior Court (see MG 31, E 33). He incorporated the Canada-Israel Foundation in 1965. An active communal leader, he founded the Ottawa Talmud Torah, West-End Branch in 1943. He served as President of the Ottawa Jewish Community Council, 1953-1955 and President of Agudath Israel Congregation of Ottawa, 1948-1963. He was the Jewish National Fund of Canada Ottawa Negev Dinner honoree in 1978.
