2 audio cassettes (ca. 2 h).Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes and clippings relating to Max Shecter's community involvement, including the Canadian Committee for Soviet Jewry, B'nai B'rith Canada, the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Canadian Zionist Federation and his bid for election as a Progressive Conservative candidate in 1967 for the provincial riding of Downsview, 1950-1986. The fonds contains photographs of Mr. Shecter with various Canadian and Israeli political personalities; giving speeches as a leader of B'nai B'rith Canada, and at other functions; Mr. Shecter and others at various meetings; and with his family in Israel, [ca. 1950-1984].
Fonds also contains sound recordings of Maurice Steinberg chairing a 1976 ceremonial remembrance for deceased B'nai B'rith members and installation ceremonies at a 1979 B'nai B'rith International Council meeting with an inaugural address by Max Shecter.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Shecter, Max, 1923-2000 : A national leader of B'nai B'rith Canada and the Canadian Zionist Federation, Max Shecter was born and educated in Toronto. He served as president of B'nai B'rith District Grand Lodge No. 22, 1963-1964, and vice-president of B'nai B'rith International, 1965-1966. He was the first chairman of Bnai B'rith Canada's League for Human Rights. He was deputy national president of the C.Z.F. since 1983 and served on the national executives of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Canada-Israel Committee. He was national chairman of the Canadian Committee for Soviet Jewry, 1977-1980. During his tenure there was a large exodus of Jews from the former Soviet Union. He also served as president of Beth Shalom Synagogue, Toronto in 1957.Additional information:General note:Donated by Max H.
