Skornia, Harry J., b. 1910 : Harry J. Skornia, media scholar and activist in the field of public broadcasting, was born in northern Michigan in the United States in 1910, and was educated at Michigan State University and at the University of Michigan (M.A., Ph.D., 1937). He taught languages at the University of Michigan and at DePauw University in Kansas before moving into broadcasting, working for an NBC radio station in Indianapolis. In 1941, he became chairman of the Broadcasting Department at Indiana University and Director of the new radio station there, positions he held until 1953.

During this time, Skornia also worked for the United States government, helping to design a new national, non-commercial broadcast system in West Germany (1948-1949). He filled a similar post in Austria from 1951-1953. In later years, similar consulting assignments in other countries, notably Italy, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand, helped to establish his international reputation as a world broadcasting expert. In 1953, Skornia became executive director of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters. In this capacity, and later as president of the association, he worked toward the promotion of public and non-commercial educational broadcasting.

Skornia later returned to academic life, teaching at the University of Illinois while continuing to deliver lectures, attend conferences, and to serve on executive and advisory boards in the fields of communications and broadcasting. He retired in 1975. Harry J. Skornia is the author of several books and numerous articles on television and broadcasting.
