Fonds consists of two series of textual records, 1902-1983. Series one, National Director's Office, includes records of national policy conferences and their predecessors, correspondence, subject files, district and area files and administrative files; records of the Public Relations Department and the Education and Welfare Department. Series two, Research Department of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers contains the following records: Collective agreement files; audit reports, newspapers, and scrap-books; files relating to Canada copied from the International Offices of the USWA; C.H. Millard interview; documents on the Steel Workers Union, Stelco. Microfilmed material includes an almost-complete run of the magazine "Information" published by the Education Department of the Canadian National Office, 1952-1971; files relating to Canada selected from papers of various international offices of the USWA and transcripts of interviews with several Canadian leaders, 1940-1965. Microfilmed material is located on reels: M-6786 to M-6789A.

Textual records includes material in horizontal storage, containers 244 to 256. This material includes an organization chart of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company Ltd., and posters on a variety of topics, 1945 to 1979.

The fonds includes one series of photographic materials, 1935-1978, depicting activities of the United Steelworkers of America in Canada.

The fonds also contains moving image material, including silent and sound films, 1945-1965, on subjects such as the USWA annual picnic; Labour Day parade and picnic; Local 100; Strike at Stelco in Hamilton ; and March on Murdochville. There are also video reels, 1974-1979, documenting proceedings of meetings and policy conferences, oral history interviews of union leaders, and educational documentaries about health & safety and other trade union issues.

In addition, fonds includes sound recordings that document speeches, meetings and proceedings. Included is an excerpt of a speech entitled Mouseland, delivered by T.C. Douglas, leader of the New Democratic Party; an excerpt from a meeting of the USWA ad hoc committee; proceedings of a special convention of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Western Federation of Miners (forerunner to Mine Mill); and oral history interviews by Donald Montgomery, labour official, of Harry Simon and Max Federman.

The fonds also contains two blueprints, 1919-1943, of the Trenton Steel Works Ltd. in Trenton, Nova Scotia. These form a part of the records of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Coal industry in Canada (Carroll Commission) of 1944, whose report would be tabled in the House of Commons on 31 January 1947.

The Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) was one of several committees established to organize industrial workers under the umbrella of the Committee for Industrial Organization. In 1936 CIO President John L. Lewis placed Silby Barrett, Director of the United Mine Workers of America in Nova Scotia, in charge of SWOC in Canada. Charles Millard was appointed Regional Director in 1939. In 1942 the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) was formed and Millard was appointed National Director of the Union in Canada. He was re-elected to this position until his retirement in 1956 when he was succeeded by William Mahoney. Gérard Docquier was elected to the position upon Mahoney's retirement in 1977.

The National Director is responsible for the provision of specialized services including research and publicity, and has a co-ordinating role for the union in Canada. The District Directors handle contract negotiations and administration, and organizational work, except when such matters are assigned to the National Director for special reasons. Initially the USWA divided Canada into two districts: District 5 covering the Maritimes and District 6 encompassing the rest of the country. In 1946 Quebec was transferred to the jurisdiction of District 5 and in 1961 District 5 was restricted to Quebec and the Atlantic provinces were designated District 2.

General note:

Volumes 1 to 129 were presented in 1977 by the National Office of the USWA. The files of the National Director's Office were microfilmed in 1979. The run of "Information" was microfilmed in 1979, from originals held in the Library of the National Office. The Contracts series (volumes 129 to 243) was presented in 1984 by the National Office.
The present and former Canadian National Directors of the USW are: Charles Millard (1942-1956), William Mahoney (1956-1977), Gérard Docquier (1977-1985), Leo W. Gerard (1985-1994), Lawrence I. McBrearty (1994-2004), Ken Neumann (2004-2022) and Marty Warren (elected 2022).
