Family correspondence and papers, 1740-1762, of Archibald Gordon, 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment, written while serving in Scotland and Ireland, and on campaign in North America and the West Indies during the Seven Years' War. Also included are a commission in a colonial regiment, his will, and the estate settlement. Photocopies, 107 pages. Most letters are addressed to Nell Gordon, his wife, and to Bell (Gordon) Achmuty, his daughter. They discuss family financial matters and news, and provide details of regimental life. Others are addressed to the officers of the 27th regiment, particularly Thomas Achmuty, his son-in-law, and to Henry Pringle and Jack Willcocks (John Wilcox). Included are Gordon's commission as a Captain in a regiment being raised in Pennsylvania by William Gooch, dated 14 July 1740, his will, dated 18 May 1759 at Albany, New York, and the estate settlement, dated 24 July 1762 aboard the transport SWAN off Havana, Cuba, signed by Henry Pringle. Also included are letters from Philamena Taylor, sister of Archibald Gordon, telling of the surrender of Montreal. Arranged chronologically.
