The Akeley 35mm camera was designed by Carl Akeley for use in documentary and newsfilm. The Akeley (NMST #870111) was used by William (Bill) J. Wienand Jr. during his career as a freelance newsreel stringer from the late 1930s until 1949 and he explains the operation and use of his camera.~Discussed are the types of filters and lenses for the Akeley camera. He mentions that the price of this camera was comparable to others, although the Bell and Howell was more expensive. The Akeley had a 200 foot magazine, in comparison to the Bell and Howell which had a 400 foot, until the advent of sound when 1000 foot magazines became the norm. Wienand points out the focusing system on the camera, and as he works with the camera, lists his career history. Illustrated is the adjustable handle, a special feature of the camera with the gyro head. The notcher on the camera helped separate and locate scenes. When ordering film rom Dupont, Agfa or Kodak, it was loaded into 200 foot spools with Akeley wind (emulsion out) onto a special spool for Akeleys. The camera being illustrated is serial number 101.~Wienand sets up the tripod and sets up the camera onto the tripod with four pins. The Akeley was the first to feature a gyro head with its special feature handle which moved in all directions. Viewing and filming lenses were gear connected, and could, therefore, be adjusted during shooting. The camera also had a 1:1 gear on the left to shoot frame by frame. These cameras were used primarily by explorers and for newsreels. Wienand worked for Kinogram, Pathé, Universal, and Paramount. He was assisted by Art Mazer. <54mn>

Shot in Sam Kula's office, Director of the National Film, Television and Sound Archives, in the Hunter Building on O'Connor Street in Ottawa. (This building served as home to NFTSA from 1975 to 1977 and was demolished during the 1980s).
