Interview of Alex Shearwood, son of Fred Shearwood, a longtime Chief Engineer of the Dominion Bridge Company. Shearwood discusses the background of the Quebec Bridge disasters and two other bridge "failures", namely, the Bascule and Black Bridges over the Lachine Canal in the 1920s. Shearwood briefly mentions the Quebec Bridge disaster of 1907 when the bridge, built by an American company (the Phoenix Co.) collapsed killing 75 workers. Also recounted is the joint venture between the Dominion Bridge Company and Canada Bridge Co., called the St. Lawrence Bridge Co., to build another Quebec Bridge and the collapse of the centre span killing 13 workers in 1916. Also discussion of the collapse of the "concrete counter weight" on the Bascule Bridge and the damage to the Black Bridge's "turn table" when the bridge was hit by a yacht. Other topics include: the interest in boat designing and racing shared by his father and Dominion Bridge President George Herrick Duggan; the many employees who took the train from Bonaventure Station to the "isolated" Dominion Bridge plant in Lachine; and finally, the company's attitude toward competitors.
