Service message from John Kannawin in London, introducing six messages from Canadian servicemen serving overseas to their families in Canada, for the CBC radio series Canada’s Fighting Front. There are 10-second pauses between each message and Kannawin identifies each speaker. The messages are as follows: Message from RCAF Flight Lieutenant Frank E. Jones, DFC, a Spitfire pilot in Malta, to his mother in the Chateau Frontenac hotel, Quebec City. Kannawin introduces this message by questioning information that the hotel is in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Message from RCAF Pilot Officer Pat Burns, a reconnaissance bomber coastal command observer, from overseas to his mother, Mrs. J.S. Burns, in Ogema, Saskatchewan. He says that it will be good to be back home “especially when we lick Hitler”. Message from an RCAF Wing Commander John Paul Scott in Ceylon to his father G.W. Scott of 45 Lansdowne Avenue, Galt, Ontario. He talks about searching for enemy submarines and protecting convoys, and finding crew of a ship that had been torpedoed. Message in French from Sergeant [Wilfrid Gagné] of the Fusiliers Mont-Royal to his mother Mrs. Napoléon [Gagné] of 1184 rue Cobourg, Montreal, about returning to combat from Northern Ireland, from George Scott, a Canadian sailor aboard a British destroyer, to family in [Markdale], a little town near Owen Sound, about the role of the Canadian Navy doing its bit, the vital part played by the navy in Canada’s war effort and pride in the work done by the navy. Message from Herbert Foreman, another Canadian sailor aboard the destroyer, to relatives in Conningdale, Saskatchewan. Foreman gives the same message as that given by George Scott. John Kannawin signs off, stating “Goodnight Canada”.

1. For reference tape see 1982-0043/124, cut 2.~2. There are two cuts of this transmission, the first almost completely unintelligible due to surface abrasion and atmospherics during the broadcast from London to Canada. The second version is somewhat easier to understand, although still difficult.
